About

Jimsmith lake

Jimsmith Lake Provincial Park is one of Cranbrook’s most popular places to spend time near the water, offering a calm lake setting paired with a well developed park just minutes from town.

THE LAKE

Jimsmith Lake is known for its grassy shoreline, calm water, and easy access. The lake is well suited to swimming, paddling, and quiet time on the shore. Canoes and kayaks are welcome, with a paved launch available, while power boats are not permitted, helping keep the water peaceful.

Fishing is a regular draw, with the lake known for rainbow trout and largemouth bass. Sandy and pebble beach areas make it easy to settle in for the day, and docks extend out over the water for swimming, fishing, or simply watching the lake.

THE PROVINCIAL PARK

As a provincial park, Jimsmith Lake offers both day use and camping. The campground is set among Douglas fir and larch forest and includes vehicle accessible sites suited to tents and recreational vehicles. Picnic areas sit close to the water, with upper and lower day use spaces that allow room for group gatherings, lawn games, and relaxed afternoons.

Facilities include pit toilets, drinking water during the operating season, a playground in the upper day use area, and accessible features such as a beach mat to support easier lake access.

NATURE, HISTORY, AND SETTING

Cattail marshes along the lake’s edge provide habitat for birds, fish, and insects, making this a strong place for wildlife viewing and nature study. The lake has long been part of Cranbrook’s story, with references to Jimsmith Lake appearing in local records as early as 1898. While the origin of the name remains uncertain, the lake’s connection to the city is clear, with its overflow feeding a chain of waterways that move through Cranbrook and into Joseph Creek.

Close to town yet distinctly removed, Jimsmith Lake Provincial Park offers a simple way to spend time outdoors without travelling far.
