The Spirit of the Rockies Festival is Cranbrook’s signature community celebration and its longest-running festival. Organized by the Spirit of the Rockies Society, a non-profit volunteer organization, the festival is designed to bring residents, visitors, and local businesses together through a primarily free, city-wide celebration held over four days.
A Festival for the Whole Community
The festival features a wide range of activities and events spread throughout Cranbrook. Highlights include a parade, food park, artisan market, and art exhibits, along with pancake breakfasts, BBQs, beer gardens, and live music. Visitors can enjoy family-friendly programming and live entertainers throughout the event.
Sports and competitions are a major part of the festival, including a 40+ team softball tournament, an adult soccer tournament, Logger Sports demonstrations, a Strongman Competition, and a popular car show and shine that draws participants and spectators alike.
Central Fairgrounds and City-Wide Events
The Central Fairgrounds serve as a central hub for festival activity, showcasing live entertainment, food vendors, and family attractions. Additional events take place throughout the city, including slo-pitch tournaments and the Cranbrook Youth Ambassador Showcase, making the Spirit of the Rockies Festival a truly city-wide celebration.
A Festival with Deep Roots
First held in 1966, the festival was originally known as Sam Steele Days, named after Sam Steele of the Northwest Mounted Police, who served in the Cranbrook area from 1887 to 1888. In 2023, the festival was officially renamed the Spirit of the Rockies Festival, reflecting its continued growth and evolving community focus.
