Royal Alexandra Hall

A Grand Piece of Canadian Railway History

The Royal Alexandra Hall is a remarkable survivor of Canada’s golden age of rail travel and grand hotels. Originally built as part of the Royal Alexandra Hotel in Winnipeg in 1906, this Edwardian-era space once served as the social centerpiece of the city. When the hotel was demolished in 1971, the Grand Café was carefully dismantled into hundreds of individual pieces and stored, preserving one of the finest examples of Canadian railway hotel architecture.

After more than two decades in storage, the Cranbrook History Centre acquired the historic components in 1999. The hall was painstakingly restored and reassembled inside a newly constructed exterior shell in Cranbrook, with the support of millennium grants and public contributions. In 2004, the Royal Alexandra Hall officially reopened, giving new life to a nationally significant heritage space.

An Elegant Venue for Events and Celebrations

Today, the Royal Alexandra Hall is widely considered the most elegant public venue in southeastern British Columbia. The space features soaring ceilings, ornate architectural details, and exceptional acoustics, making it ideal for concerts, banquets, lectures, and community gatherings. The hall comfortably seats over 200 guests and includes an adjacent catering kitchen, allowing for seamless event hosting.

Visitors consistently praise the hall for its beauty, atmosphere, and sense of history, noting how the restored details create a truly memorable experience. Whether attending a public event or a private function, guests are immersed in a setting that reflects the opulence of early Canadian rail travel.

Weddings at the Royal Alexandra Hall

The Royal Alexandra Hall is a premier wedding venue in the region, offering a timeless and romantic backdrop for ceremonies and receptions. Couples can choose the main hall for larger celebrations or opt for more intimate spaces on site, including the Museum Entrance Hall, the Solarium River Rouge train car, or the Dining Car Argyle.

The hall is especially popular for wedding receptions, with many couples highlighting the attentive staff, beautiful setting, and historic character as key reasons for choosing this venue. Wedding rates and options are available through the Cranbrook History Centre’s wedding packages.
