A LIVING PLACE OF HISTORY, STILL UNFOLDING
Fort Steele Heritage Town offers a walk through the stories that shaped the East Kootenay. Once a gold and silver rush settlement, the site preserves a full townscape where buildings, objects, and daily routines reflect life in the late 1800s.
Now operating under the leadership of the Cranbrook Archives, Museum, and Landmark Society, Fort Steele continues to evolve while staying grounded in careful preservation and honest storytelling.
THE SITE
Fort Steele is a living heritage town, not a static display. Restored buildings line wooden boardwalks, with costumed interpreters and working spaces that show how people lived, worked, and built community during the region’s early years.
Museums and collections add depth, offering context through artifacts, photographs, and exhibits that connect individual stories to the broader history of the area.
EXPERIENCES AND PROGRAMMING
Hands-on activities and guided experiences invite visitors to engage directly with the past. Trades demonstrations, tours, and interactive programs bring movement and sound to the town, helping history feel present rather than distant.
Events and festivals throughout the year add another layer, using music, food, and period activities to animate the streets and gathering spaces.
PLANNING A VISIT
Fort Steele is best explored at a walking pace. Some surfaces are uneven, including boardwalks that can be slippery when wet, so sturdy footwear is recommended. Weather can affect daily offerings, and some programming may change depending on conditions and staffing.
Cooling stations are available in key buildings, including the Visitor Centre and museum spaces.
ACCESSIBILITY AND POLICIES
Accessibility improvements are ongoing, and visitors with specific needs are encouraged to check in with staff upon arrival. Service animals are welcome, with check-in required at the Visitor Centre. Pets are not permitted within the site to protect livestock and ensure safety for all visitors.
Food service and amenities may vary, and planning ahead helps make the most of the visit.
