WINTER RIDING ON TRAILS BUILT FOR THE SEASON
Cranbrook’s trail network is well suited to winter fat biking, with rolling terrain and wide-spaced trees that support a broad range of riding abilities. Snowfall is consistent enough to create winter conditions, while still allowing trails to be groomed and maintained throughout the season.
The result is a trail system that stays active all winter, shared by cyclists, hikers, skiers, and snowshoers.
SOUTH STAR FAT BIKE TRAILS
The South Star trail network is the primary area for fat biking in Cranbrook. Trails here are groomed and maintained specifically for winter use, creating a firm, level track approximately 21 inches wide.
These packed trails are solid enough for walking, snowshoeing, skiing, and biking, making them accessible and predictable for winter riding. Grooming supports smooth movement and consistent conditions across the network.
OTHER WINTER TRAIL OPTIONS
Winter riding is also possible in the Cranbrook Community Forest, though South Star remains the main destination due to regular grooming. Trail conditions can vary, and riders are encouraged to check current information before heading out.
Local trail groups and volunteers play a key role in maintaining access and conditions across the region.
COMMUNITY AND STEWARDSHIP
Trail grooming and maintenance are supported by local organizations and volunteers. Information about trail areas, conditions, and grooming efforts is shared through community groups, and those interested in contributing can connect directly with the groups involved.
This shared effort helps keep winter riding accessible and enjoyable.
GETTING STARTED
For those new to fat biking, local bike shops can help with rentals and setup, as well as current trail recommendations based on conditions and ability. Riders are encouraged to dress appropriately, carry food and water, and plan routes ahead of time.
Using a trail-mapping app is recommended for navigating the network and keeping track of location while riding.
