About

The Lost Elephant

The Lost Elephant is a backcountry cycling adventure that winds through some of the most remote and rugged terrain in the East Kootenay. Created as a way for friends to share a meaningful journey, the route has grown into a sought-after challenge while preserving its original spirit of camaraderie, curiosity, and perseverance.

The name draws inspiration from the legend of Cranbrook Ed, the circus elephant who escaped into the surrounding wilderness. That story of wandering freely through wild country mirrors the nature of the ride itself, disappearing into valleys, cresting ridgelines, and following long-forgotten roads far from the everyday.

The Routes

Jumbo Course

The Jumbo route is a long-distance loop designed for riders seeking a demanding backcountry experience. It begins with a gradual rollout before committing to extended climbs, rugged doubletrack, and long descents through forested valleys and high passes. Riders encounter a mix of rocky roads, creek crossings, ridge-top travel, and deeply remote sections where self-reliance is essential.

The route weaves through some of the region’s most iconic backcountry landscapes, linking historic corridors and quiet mountain valleys before eventually returning toward Cranbrook. It is a test of endurance, patience, and adaptability, rewarded with expansive views and a strong sense of accomplishment.

Dumbo Course

The Dumbo route offers a shorter but still challenging alternative that captures the character of the Lost Elephant without the full distance of the Jumbo. Riders share the opening terrain before diverging onto a lower route that avoids some of the highest summits, then reconnects with the main loop to experience many of the same remote valleys and signature sections.

This option maintains the adventure-focused nature of the event while providing a more accessible way to experience the terrain, scenery, and shared atmosphere of the ride.

What to Expect

Both routes travel through isolated backcountry areas with limited services and variable conditions. Riders should be prepared for long days, steep climbs, rough surfaces, creek crossings, and changing weather. Wildlife encounters are possible, and mechanical or navigational challenges are part of the experience.

The Lost Elephant is not about speed or competition. It is about exploration, shared effort, and the moments that happen when the road fades, the terrain gets rough, and the journey becomes the reward.
